Eventually it is likely that a developing business of any size will need to hire some staff to ensure that an increase in workload does not lead to the business collapsing under its own weight. This means there can be things that anyone looking to interview potential employees for the first time need to know.
When it comes to screening applicants, ideally you will not take on the entire process of short listing and conducting interviews yourself, partly as this will take a lot of the time that you need to spend on your business, and partly because getting another point of view helps prevent individual bias in selecting applicants. If someone is not chosen for an interview they should receive a letter of thanks for their application that explains briefly why ? as this information could be useful should any complaints be made. You should also keep a copy of this letter yourself.
When you come to interview short listed applicants, these should begin punctually and be conducted without interruptions ? which can be a challenge if you are running a home business. If this is the case, either arrange interviews for a time when you are alone in the house, or use an alternative location ? such as a virtual office meeting room. The interviews should all be structured in the same way, and you should think about what the job involves and the information you have about each applicant, prior to the interview, so that you ask the right questions.
