Style Comes to the Midsize Sedan at the 2012 New York Auto Show

Fuel Economy

With the feds mandating increasingly stringent fuel-economy standards, manufacturers like Nissan are shedding chassis weight and pulling out other tricks. Nissan says its new Altima is almost a hundred pounds lighter than the outgoing car, and its revised 2.5-liter gets a mild power boost, to 182 hp, to go with a CVT said to have 40 percent less internal friction. Though few CVTs thrill, Nissan remains committed to the transmission, and that four-cylinder with the CVT will get a claimed 27 city/38 highway. Impressive?the mild-hybrid Chevy Malibu Eco doesn't do as well.
