Congress set to OK bill renewing anti-violence law

WASHINGTON (AP) ? House Republicans appeared resigned Thursday to accepting an ambitious expansion of the Violence Against Women Act that would bring gays, lesbians, immigrants and Native Americans under its protective umbrella.

A House vote to approve the Senate's version of legislation renewing the Violence Against Women Act would send the legislation to President Barack Obama for his signature and help burnish the GOP's image with women.

Republicans generally agree the law is needed, but many in the GOP oppose a sweeping expansion. Before taking up the broad-ranging bill approved by the Senate two weeks ago, the House will vote on a more limited GOP version. But with Democrats solidly behind the Senate bill and Republicans split over their own alternative, that version was likely to be rejected.

In contrast to the partisan divide in the House, the Senate passed the measure on a 78-22 vote, with all Democrats, all women senators and 23 of 45 Republicans supporting it. The Senate bill goes further than some Republicans like in significantly broadening the scope of the law's coverage.

The GOP decision not to prolong the dispute over how best to extend the 1994 law came after the party's poor showing among women in last fall's election and Democratic success in framing the debate over the anti-violence law as Republican policy hostile to women. President Barack Obama won 55 percent of the women's vote last November. Republican presidential candidates haven't won the women's vote since 1984, when Ronald Reagan held a 12-point lead over Walter Mondale among women.

With House approval of the Senate bill, Obama will sign the reauthorization of the law that laid the foundation for federal efforts to better protect women, and some men, from domestic abuse and better prosecute the abusers.

The law expired in 2011, and has been stuck in political limbo as the House, up to now, has resisted Senate efforts to enlarge the scope of the legislation.

The legislation appeared headed for another impasse at the end of last week when the House introduced its version, which omitted references to sexual orientation and weakened Senate provisions giving Indian courts greater jurisdiction to try non-Indians accused of acts of domestic violence on tribal lands.

But on Tuesday House GOP leaders, apparently not wanting to add a war on women to the ongoing war over the budget, gave ground, agreeing that the House will vote on the Senate version if it first defeats the House proposal. With every Democrat and several dozen Republicans supporting the Senate bill, it is expected to prevail.

Rep. Jon Runyan, R-N.J., said a letter he and 18 other House Republicans wrote to the GOP leadership, urging support of a bipartisan plan that would reach all victims of domestic violence, may have been the catalyst in ending the stalemate. A strong supporter of the law, Runyan said the most important thing was compromising and moving the legislation forward. "A lot of people around here have a hard time understanding that."

Another Republican backing the Senate approach was Tom Cole of Oklahoma, one of only three House members of Indian heritage and a strong proponent of giving Indian courts the right to prosecute non-Indian domestic violence suspects. He said that while the latest House bill, crafted by Majority Leader Eric Cantor, R-Va., had made strides in addressing the Indian court issue, "it falls short of giving tribes what they need to keep their citizens protected from the scourge of domestic violence."

Indian women are victimized by domestic violence at rates more than double national averages, and federal prosecutors, lacking the resources to pursue cases on isolated reservations, prosecute only about half of the violent crimes. Opponents of the Senate bill say there are constitutional questions about Indian courts trying non-Indians.

The House bill quickly ran up against a wall of resistance, with the White House on Tuesday providing a list of supposed flaws. Those included inhibiting prosecutions by tribal authorities, removing Senate provisions that address the high rates of violence on college campuses, omitting a Senate provision reauthorizing the Trafficking Victims Protection Act and not explicitly protecting LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) victims from discrimination when they seek services funded by the law.

The House bill also was opposed by major anti-violence and Native American groups, and House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi said all Democrats were being urged to oppose it. "The groups that are excluded are the groups that are in most need of protection against violence," she said.

Rep. Louise Slaughter, D-N.Y., who co-wrote the original 1994 law with former Rep. Pat Schroeder, D-Colo., said the law, which provides grants for legal assistance, transitional housing, law enforcement training and hotlines, has helped bring instances of domestic violence down by two-thirds over the past two decades. "Perhaps the greatest victory," she said, "is that the law finally brought millions of victims out of the shadows and gave them a place to stand."

In search of 'swag'

To me, it meant stolen goods; but what did it mean to my teen son?

By Robert Klose / February 28, 2013

How rich American slang has become. I feel as if I am hanging on for dear life as the language shifts and morphs around me, leaving me at sea in an increasingly unfamiliar vernacular. Such are the wages of the passing years.

' + google_ads[0].line2 + '
' + google_ads[0].line3 + '

'; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; google_adtest = "on"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

The latest fragment to arrive on the shores of my ignorance is "swag." When my 16-year-old son first uttered it, I was caught off guard. Here's what he said in reference to one of his friends: "Jesse's got swag." Now, in my experience, swag has two meanings: It refers to either stolen goods or a collection of goodies, such as the boxes of toiletries that colleges distribute to students at the beginning of the school year. But when I said to my son, "Where did Jesse get it?" he regarded me with a pained expression and asked, incredulously, "What are you talking about?"

When I explained what I understood "swag" to mean, Anton laughed ? laughed! ? at me. Then he shook his head. "OK," I said. "Then what does 'swag' mean?" His answer: "If you had it, you'd know."

There it was: I had to first have swag in order to know what it meant. A perfect Catch-22. So I sought another route to enlightenment ? the seventh-grader I mentor in the local middle school. During one of our sessions, as we pored over his Spanish homework, I broached the delicate topic. "Do you know what swag is?" I asked him. "Sure," he said. "It means that you're cool."

Ah, so simple, but yet so proprietary that my own son couldn't admit me to the cabala of its meaning. Pressing my luck, I swallowed my dignity and quietly asked my mentee, "Do you think I have it?" Without taking his eyes from his work, he shrugged, "Yeah, you've got a lot of it."

Glowing, I communicated this intelligence to Anton at my first opportunity. "Ricky said I have swag," I announced as he hovered in front of the open fridge. "A lot of it."

Anton shook his head, as if he didn't know what he was going to do with me. "How old is Ricky?" he asked.

"Twelve."

Anton let out a deprecating breath. "Twelve?" he echoed. "What does he know!"

Hmm ? swag was clearly in the eye of the beholder, and seemingly difficult to earn or get credit for. The next day, as I was chatting with my students in the college biology class I teach, I was moved to ask them about this word. They were, of course, familiar with it. Then one of them asked why I wanted to know. I didn't feel it appropriate to tell them how haunted I was by the realization that I might not possess swag, so I dodged the inquiry and commenced the lesson.

Well, no matter, I told myself. I had lived in blissful ignorance of my swaglessness until now, so I was sure I could continue on intact. But some perceptive, caring soul in my class must have detected my note of despondency in mentioning the elusive quality. The next day, when I came to school, there was a multicolored sticker affixed to my office door: I'VE GOT SWAG.

Need I mention that when I returned home I lay in anxious wait for Anton? As he came through the door, I accosted him with, "Someone put a sticker on my office door. It says, I'VE GOT SWAG." What I didn't add by way of emphasis was, "So take that!"

"It doesn't matter," said Anton as he headed for the fridge.

"Doesn't matter?" I already felt my heart sinking.

"No," he said offhandedly. "Swag is out. There's a new word now."

"A new word?" I echoed. "What is it?"

Turning to me, Anton's eyes were once again filled with pity. "You mean you don't know?"

Ancient shark relative had? buzzsaw mouth

Ray Troll

This is a re-creation of a Helicoprion, which lived 270 million years ago and is the only animal ever with a complete 360-degree spiral of teeth.

By Jennifer Viegas
Discovery

The world?s only animal, past or present, with a complete 360-degree spiral of teeth was Helicoprion, which sliced into prey like a buzzsaw.

This sharklike fish, which lived 270 million years ago, is described in the latest issue of Biology Letters. It had one of the most unusual mouths and sets of teeth in the animal kingdom.

"When the animal closed its mouth on prey, the spiral of sharp teeth rotated backwards, like a circular saw, and slashed through the meat,? lead author Leif Tapanila, an associate professor in the Department of Geosciences at Idaho State University, told Discovery News.

Tapanila is also the research curator and head of the Earth Sciences Division at the Idaho Museum of Natural History. For the study, he and his colleagues took the first ever 3-D images of Helicoprion remains.

Scientists have puzzled over this animal for more than a century, given its highly unusual "tooth whorl.? The new research sheds light on what this prehistoric marine species looked like, what its ancestry was and how it behaved.

"Helicoprion looked a lot like a big-bodied modern shark, but it had a very unusual mouth,? Tapanila said. "An arc of 15 to 18 serrated teeth were exposed in the center of its lower jaw, and it had no protruding teeth in the upper jaw.?

Ray Troll

Leif Tapanila, an associate professor in the Department of Geosciences at Idaho State University, with the Helicoprion fossil.

The buzz saw-looking tooth whorl had two functions, the researchers determined. The outermost part anchored the teeth for biting, while the rest of the inner spiral was designed to house the old and previously used teeth from when the animal was younger.

The scientists did not see much wear, tear and breakage, so they suspect Helicoprion primarily sliced into squid or other ancient relatively soft and somewhat chewy sea life. Aside from squid and their early relatives, armored and cartilaginous fish lived in Helicoprion?s ecosystem, along with brachiopods, bivalves and snails. "Cartilaginous? refers to fish made up of cartilage, a firm yet flexible connective tissue.

While Helicoprion looked and acted like a shark, the researchers determined that it?s at the base of the family tree that today includes chimaera (aka "ghost sharks?) and ratfish. Ghost sharks are not technically sharks, but they look and act a lot like them.

Tapanila explained that cartilaginous fish are divided into two main categories: sharks and rays on one side, ratfish and chimaera on the other. They are all marine predators.

No living land or sea animal directly resembles Helicoprion -- especially it?s buzz-saw tooth whorl.

"It was really an improbable animal, and maybe one of the best examples of a successful ?Hopeful Monster,?? Tapanila said, explaining that this refers to evolutionary processes that can result in very unusual body types, with most doomed to failure.

While Helicoprion eventually went extinct, it used to have a nearly global distribution and existed over a period of 10 million years or more, proving that even some eccentric body designs can be successful if they meet the particular needs influenced by the animal?s environment, food sources and more.

John Long, a professor of paleontology at Flinders University, told Discovery News that he fully supports the new findings about Helicoprion and its kin.

"This study ends a century old mystery about this iconic fossil (species) and highlights the unexpected diverse body form that holocephalans occupied,? Long said.

Tapanila and his team would love to find a fossilized prey animal in the mouth of such a prehistoric shark-like animal, to better determine which exact species they were hunting and eating. Given that they lived even before the dinosaurs, Tapanila isn?t "holding his breath? for such a rare find.

Oscars Prediction Dartboard: Who Was Wrong-est?

The Oscars may be less consequential than presidential elections, but it?s another opportunity to gamble for predictive bragging rights. Some, such as the Huffington Post?s David Rothschild, have adopted a data-driven, Nate Silver-esque approach, while others simply seem to combine their personal preferences with nebulous theories of the film industry. Now that the Oscars are over, who made all the wrong calls, and who should be condemned for witchcraft?

In the dartboard above, each dart represents the percentage of correct Oscar calls a commentator made out of 11 categories: Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Director, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Original Screenplay, Best Animated Feature Film, Best Documentary Feature, and Best Cinematography. Amsterdam to raise legal age for prostitutes

AMSTERDAM (AP) ? Amsterdam plans to raise the minimum age for prostitutes from 18 to 21 and force brothels to close during early morning hours.

At a press conference Tuesday, mayor Eberhard van der Laan said the moves came from a decision to crack down on crime in the city's famed Red Light District and protect sex workers ? mostly women ? from abuse.

Amsterdam is home to about 8,000 professional sex workers, the city estimates, half of them who operate behind windows with red velvet curtains and red lights. Van der Laan said under the new regime, all windows would be closed from 4 a.m. to 9 a.m.

Prostitution was legalized in the Netherlands in 2000. It has been tolerated in Amsterdam since the 1600s, when the spice trade made it one of the world's wealthiest port cities. But the city has been tightening its rules since 2006 and shuttered a third of its brothel windows from 2007 to 2009.

Van der Laan said the city intends to introduce the new measures by July.

"We think the situation is so grave that we have to act," he told reporters.

He said young prostitutes were particularly vulnerable because they were often groomed by pimps who force them into service when they turn 18. He said the city's first priority was to keep women from being pushed into prostitution and its second was to help those who wish to exit the profession.

Other measures he plans to introduce include forcing all brothel owners to submit a business plan.

The Dutch tolerance of prostitution has always been a subject of debate, and after it was legalized, city officials realized that move had not served to reduce abuses. A proposed new national law would create a database of registered prostitutes, but it has never been passed by Parliament.

Dutch officials are now studying Sweden's prostitution laws as a possible model. Swedish law criminalizes only visiting prostitutes and does not punish the prostitutes themselves.

NEW YORK (AP) ? The estranged wife of a police officer struggled to keep her composure Monday as she testified about discovering shocking online chats and other evidence on his computer showing he had discussed killing her and abducting, torturing and eating other women.

"I was going to be tied up by my feet and my throat slit, and they would have fun watching the blood gush out of me because I was young," Kathleen Mangan-Valle told a Manhattan jury that one chat revealed.

Mangan-Valle, 27, also read about plans to put one friend in a suitcase, wheel her out of her building and murder her. Two other women were "going to be raped in front of each other to heighten their fears," while another was going to be roasted alive over an open fire, she said.

"The suffering was for his enjoyment, and he wanted to make it last as long as possible," she said.

Mangan-Valle broke down in tears several times, but the emotional peak of the day came when a defense attorney showed her pictures of Officer Gilberto Valle in uniform feeding their newborn daughter, prompting her and Valle to openly weep as the judge sent the jury away for an afternoon break.

The drama came on the first day of testimony at the closely watched trial of the 28-year-old Valle, a baby-faced defendant dubbed the "Cannibal Cop" by city tabloids.

Valle is accused of conspiracy to kidnap a woman and unauthorized use of a law enforcement database that prosecutors say he used to help build a list of potential targets. A conviction on the kidnapping count carries a possible life sentence.

The officer has claimed his online discussions of cannibalism were harmless fetish fantasies. But in opening statements Monday, a prosecutor said "very real women" were put in jeopardy.

"Make no mistake," said Assistant U.S. Attorney Randall Jackson. "Gilbert Valle was very serious about these plans."

Defense attorney Julia Gatto argued that her client "never intended to kidnap anyone." She added: "You can't convict people for their thoughts, even if they're sick."

A college graduate and New York Police Department patrolman, Valle appeared to be leading a normal life before "things got bad," his wife said. "Weird stuff started happening."

Mangan-Valle testified her husband began asking questions about where she liked to jog, what the lighting was like and whether other people were around. Using spyware on his computer, she said, she uncovered gruesome photos and the names, heights and weights of women.

She also found that he had visited a fetish website that featured images of dead women.

"I was scared. ... I'd never seen that before," she said.

Once Mangan-Valle fled her home and reported his strange behavior to the FBI last year, agents uncovered "a heinous plot to kidnap, rape, murder and cannibalize a number of very real women," Jackson said.

The officer had attempted to contact potential victims, including a New York City elementary school teacher, to learn more about their jobs and residences, the prosecutor said. His Internet research also included the best rope to tie someone up with, recipes, human flesh, white slavery and chemicals that can knock someone out, Jackson said.

Gatto countered in her opening statement that there was "no proof of a crime here. The charges are pure fiction."

Valle, she said, had always been aroused by "unusual things," including the thought of a woman boiled down on a platter with an apple in her mouth. He found a home at a fetish website with 38,000 registered members, where regulars discuss "suffocating women, cooking and eating them," she said.

The defense has denied that Mangan-Valle was a potential victim. Valle had made clear that his wife "was unavailable for any kidnapping fantasy," the defense has said in court papers.

On cross-examination, Gatto asked Mangan-Valle if she declined to meet with the defense before the trial began.

"You're representing the man who wants to kill me," she responded. "No, I don't want to talk to you."

Valle is expected to take the stand to make the case that it was all role-playing fantasy. The defense also is planning to call experts to explain the fetish subculture and to show jurors the videotaped testimony of the fetish website's co-founder Sergey Merenkov.

Merenkov called the site "a clone of Facebook, but it is oriented to people with fetishes that are not considered standard." Asked about the most popular fetishes, he responded, "All sorts of asphyxiation" and "peril cannibalism."

Tiger Howard Devore, a psychologist and certified sex therapist who specializes in dealing with sexual dysfunction and fetishes, said the cannibalism fetish known as voreaphilia isn't common.

"For most laymen, they're going to think about it as cannibalism," Devore told The Associated Press in an interview Monday. "But what it really is, is an obsession about consuming the flesh of the other, and this can have a whole range of expressions. ... It is mostly played out in fantasy, mostly played out in role-playing."

There are well-known criminal extremes like Jeffrey Dahmer, who saved pieces of his victims' body parts and ate the flesh, Devore said, though "the instances of this kind of violence are extremely rare."

Standard Digital News - Kenya : Coffee societies face auction over ...

Updated Monday, February 25 2013 at 00:00 GMT+3

By Erastus Mulwa

KENYA:? Coffee farmers in Kangundo and Matungulu districts, Machakos County have called on the Government to step in and save their factories from imminent auction by creditors and former employees.

The farmers drawn from at least three coffee societies, including Sengani and Kyaume -both in Matungulu District, as well as Mbilini in Kangundo District have expressed fears that they would incur huge loses should their creditors make good their threat to wind up their coffee societies owing to unsettled debts running to millions of shillings.

In a letter dated January 22 this year, addressed to the chairman of Sengani Farmers Co-operative Society Ltd, several creditors and former employees have through their lawyer Anthony Mulekyo, issued a notice of intention to wind up the society.

According to the notice, the petitioners are demanding a prompt payment of a cumulative amount of Sh2,400,239 together with an interest at court rates, failure to which winding up against the society shall commence.

Interest

The letter further alleges the debt had been accruing for a long period, and that the society had breached all consents entered into between all parties in court.

?By copy of this letter, we have taken liberty to inform the PS, Ministry of Co-operatives of our intentions to file a winding up and a petition cause under section 64 of the Co-operative Societies Act, unless the outstanding total of Sh2,400,239 is paid as demanded together with accrued interest,? reads the notice in part.

Credible sources have confined to The Standard that similar notices have been issued to Kyaume and Mbilini farmers? co-operative societies.

The debts, The Standard established, relate to unpaid salaries and benefits, legal and accounting fees as well as NHIF/NSSF deductions by the petitioners which the management committees have been accused of failing to deposit with the said statutory institutions.

On Sunday, area DCO Maisha Muthoka confirmed he disbanded the Sengani management committee after it emerged officials had been engaging in corrupt practices. ?I convened a special general meeting of the farmers on February 21 where members appointed an interim committee to investigate the activities of the former office bearers and table a report within 90 days,? said Muthoka.

(AP) ? Manti Te'o wants everyone to know he's over the embarrassment of an online hoax, and he's ready to focus on football.

The Heisman Trophy runner-up acknowledges he could have done things to avoid a public spectacle. But he says if he was still embarrassed by it, he wouldn't have taken questions Saturday at the NFL's annual scouting combine.

Instead, nearly two dozen television cameras and a room full of reporters were capturing every word out of Te'o's mouth as he again tried to explain how he was duped into believing a girlfriend that never existed died last fall.

It was the largest group of reporters Te'o has faced since the story broke last month

More than 300 players, including Te'o, are in Indy this weekend to work out for NFL scouts.

Ex-Kent-Meridian teacher, coach receives five-day jail sentence for sex crime

By STEVE HUNTER

February 22, 2013 ? Updated 5:32 PM?

A former Kent-Meridian High School teacher and track coach received a five-day jail sentence Friday in King County Superior Court for communication with a minor for immoral purposes.

After the sentencing at the Norm Maleng Regional Justice Center in Kent, King County corrections officers handcuffed Ernie Ammons, 37, of Black Diamond, and escorted him out of the courtroom and to the county jail. Ammons had been free on bail since his arrest in December 2011.

Judge Lori K. Smith also sentenced Ammons to 40 hours of community service and 24 months of probation as well as ordered that he have no contact with the victim, that he must pay restitution to the victim and that he have no contact with minors except under supervision of an adult with knowledge of his registered sex offender status and with the approval of a sex offender treatment provider.

Ammons pleaded guilty to the charge Feb. 1 in exchange for a lighter sentence. He could have been sentenced up to one year in jail and fined $5,000. He must register as a sex offender.

"It's been a very trying year for me and my family," Ammons said in a brief statement to the judge. "I take responsibility for my actions. I will move forward from this. I apologize to everybody I respect, especially my family and the victim."

Prosecutors said Ammons sent sexually explicit text messages to a 16-year-old Kent-Meridian girl from June 27, 2011 to Nov. 6, 2011. Ammons taught health and physical education at the school. He also coached boys and girls track and cross country for the Royals.

The Kent School District placed Ammons on paid administrative leave in November 2011 when the allegations first came to the district's attention. He resigned from the district in January 2012. He initially pleaded not guilty to the charge in December 2011.

"Mr. Ammons lost a lot here," defense attorney Brad Meryhew said to the judge. "In the process he never made any excuses, never tried to blame anybody else - always taking responsibility."

Ammons met with a psychologist last fall to figure out a treatment plan and will participate in a sex offender treatment program with a mental health counselor in Pierce County.

"I think the next phase for him is to find a way to reach out and get support - and group (meetings) is a great way to do that - you meet a lot of other people to get that kind of support," Meryhew said. "I'm confident that Ernie will recover from this and live a good life."

Smith said she received several letters in support of Ammons.

"The court is going to follow the agreed recommendation, given all of the circumstances it seems appropriate," Smith said. "The court is hopeful that the treatment will continue and recommendations will be followed."

Smith ordered a sentence of 12 months of supervised probation and 12 months unsupervised if Ammons meets the sex offender treatment plan.

Ammons signed the following guilty statement on Feb. 1:

"On or about a time between June 27, 2011 and Nov. 6, 2011 in King County, I did communicate with (the 16-year-old girl), a person I believed to be a minor, for immoral purposes of a sexual nature," Ammons wrote in a court statement.

Ammons led the Kent-Meridian boys track team to its first state track title in spring 2011 when the Royals captured the Class 4A meet. He coached track and field at Kent-Meridian for eight years. He led the boys track team to a second-place trophy at state in 2009.

Ammons taught health and physical education at Kent-Meridian. His classes in 2011 included health and weight training. The district hired Ammons in 2004.

During a series of text messages with the girl, Ammons asked the girl to meet him for sex in the school's weight room before school.

The case came to the attention of school officials in early November 2011 when a student at another school who knew the 16-year-old girl contacted Kent-Meridian Principal Wade Barringer about inappropriate conversations between a health teacher at the school and a student. The teacher was later identified as Ammons.

Barringer talked to Ammons about the allegations, according to court documents. Ammons told Barringer the phone contacts with the student started on Facebook and the contact continued via text messaging.

Ammons told Barringer that he had exchanged text messages with the girl and they talked about exchanging money for sex. Ammons said he never intended to act on the suggestion, but he was afraid to stop texting the girl out of fear that she would expose him.

School officials contacted Kent Police Nov. 8, 2011 about the allegations and the police investigation started. Detectives gathered cellphone records and emails that showed Ammons had contacted the girl. Detectives found as many as 46 calls between the girl's phone and Ammons' phone from June 27 to Oct. 24. Several more text exchanges occurred after Oct. 24.

Ammons has volunteered as an assistant Green River Community College men's and women's cross country and track coach in Auburn since 2009.

Ammons was the second South Puget Sound League coach charged with a sex crime by county prosecutors in November 2011.

A jury found Daniel Gregory Lum-Lung, who coached girls volleyball at Mount Rainier High School in Des Moines, guilty of third-degree attempted rape of a child and communication with a minor for immoral purposes in connection with a 15-year-old girl he met in October 2011 at Kent's Lake Meridian Park. He is scheduled to be sentenced Friday, March 1 before King County Superior Court Judge Andrea Darvas.

Adam Ant delivers first new album in 18 years

LONDON (Reuters) - Flamboyant and wild, Adam Ant stormed the British pop scene in the 1980s dressed as a pirate and highwayman, but crashed out of the music world in 1995, exhausted and battling mental illness.

The British singer/songwriter spent these years raising his daughter and in and out of psychiatric care with bipolar disorder before slowly re-emerging with concerts leading to the release this year of his first album in 18 years.

Quiet-spoken and calm, Ant does not quite fit the image of the frenetic performer with white stripes over his nose who rose to fame as lead singer of the New Wave group Adam and the Ants with hits such as "Stand and Deliver" and "Prince Charming".

After the band split in 1982, Ant went solo, releasing five albums in the 1980s and 1990s and notching up 10 Top 10 songs in the UK between 1980 and 1983, including "Goody Two Shoes".

Now 58, Ant still has the eye liner, goatee beard, bandana over his greying ponytail and heavy silver jewelry.

He has no television and loves to read, particularly historical books, and has a tattoo on his left arm of Nelson's inspirational last prayer before Trafalgar below the image of his grandfather who served in the navy during World War One.

On his right arm he has a tattoo of the Oscar Wilde quote: "Experience is the name everyone gives to their mistakes."

"I can certainly say I have had that experience," Ant told Reuters in his London office, surrounded by framed gold and silver records and piles of books.

"But I feel a sense of serenity now that I have never felt before."

Ant, whose real name is Stuart Goddard, said his tattoos tell a story, as does his latest album, "Adam Ant is the Blueback Hussar in Marrying the Gunner's Daughter," released on his own record label.

He said the 17 songs on the double album were semi-autobiographical, with two or three of them dealing with his struggles with mental illness.

ROLLER COASTER JOURNEY

He was diagnosed as bipolar after deciding to leave the music industry in the mid-1990s to have a break after 17 years of touring, and to start a family and to act. Once life slowed down, his health problems emerged.

"Things catch up with you, the overwork, the stress ... things lie buried and catch up with you if you don't feel you have the license or time to deal with them at the time," said Ant, brandishing a huge silver skull ring on his right hand.

"We made one album, then another one straight afterwards, then another and another. Nowadays people will demand at least two years off between albums ... It was a treadmill and once you got off it took a bit of time to realize I had become a robot."

Ant said his lowest point was in 2002 when he was sectioned - temporarily placed in an institution - after confronting a man with a starting gun following a row in a pub.

"That was absolutely the worst time of my life. A lot of things happened and a threat was made against my daughter (who is now aged 15) and I very stupidly thought that I would deal with it. It was not the way to go," he said.

Now he is involved in the Black Dog campaign which promotes better understanding of mental health.

"For me it is nothing to be ashamed of ... and people in the public eye have the opportunity to share their experiences and help others," he said.

Ant said he missed music during his years out of the industry and three years ago started writing songs again.

"It felt like the right time. I had missed it a great deal ... It is almost a blessing to work in rock 'n roll and play live," he said, while lamenting the lack of edge and danger in today's musicians.

Reviews in the UK for the album have been mixed. The Independent gave it four out of five stars, saying it was "sprawling, overdue and not for everyone" while the Guardian gave it three stars saying Ant "is as riotous as he's sounded in three decades".

This year Ant is planning to tour in the UK and return to the United States while also working on a screenplay of his autobiography, "Stand and Deliver" and planning a fashion line.

"It is nice to feel that there are adventures and there are things out there that I'd still like to do and there are goals to reach," he said. "I am absolutely surprised that I have been able to enjoy as long a career as I have."

The Midwest Is One Big Snowy Wreck Right Now

It's snow season in America, and although the East Coast has been hogging all the weather-attention this year, the Midwest put Blizzard Nemo to shame on Thursday. It's not so much that the storm system moving through the central United States dumped more snow on the ground. This week's storm simply dumped snow on more ground, affecting 20 states over the course of an hour. CNN put the scope of the storm in startling terms, "About 60 million people -- 20% of the U.S. population -- were under winter weather warnings, watches and advisories in the 750,000 square miles affected." And yes, there was thundersnow. It even snowed in the middle of the Arizona desert.

RELATED: The Best Ways to Track the Big Blizzard

The real challenge of this week's Midwest wallop is that many of the states affected, like Missouri ?and Kansas, aren't accustomed to getting big snow storms. A month ago it was in the 70s in Kansas City. Nowhere was hit harder than the highways, where the snow accumulated so quickly that the cars couldn't get to safety quick enough. This left cars sliding into snow drifts and?trucks jackknifed and helpless on the highway. Kansas actually closed a 240-mile stretch of the Interstate and dispatched two dozen National Guard soldiers to search for travelers stranded in the mayhem. "If you don't have to travel, don't do it," said the state's governor, Sam Brownback. He reiterated, "If you don't have to get out, just really, please, don't do it." Nevertheless at least two deaths attributed to storm has been reported, both from car accidents.

RELATED: The Supermarket Apocalypse Is Upon Us

The good news is that snow is precipitation, which the plains states desperately need. The region's been struggling with droughts for what seems like years now ? global warming, ahem ? and several inches of snow melt amounts to some much appreciated respite. "We can get excited about it," one farmer told The New York Times. "But we're going to have to have more moisture, however it comes."

Firma logolar? hesaba kat?lmad???nda, GooPhone N2 Lite'? tasar?m bak?m?ndan Galaxy Note II'den ay?rt etmek olduk?a zor. G?c?n? 1 GHz saat h?z?nda ?al??an ?ift ?ekirdekli (ARM Cortex-A9) MediaTek MT6577 platformundan ve 1 GB RAM'den alan ak?ll? telefon - tablet melezi, grafik yeteneklerini ise PowerVR SGX531 grafik i?lem birimine bor?lu durumda.

Russian Meteorite Exploded With "30 Times the Energy Released by the Hiroshima Atomic Bomb"

Russian Meteorite Exploded With "30 Times the Energy Released by the Hiroshima Atomic Bomb"Following last week's meteorite explosion, scientists have finally had chance to sit down and figure out exactly what happened?and the results help explain why it shook Russia so hard.

Peter Brown, from the University of Western Ontario, Canada, has been using the extremely low frequency sound waves detected during the incident to work out exactly what happened. The ESA explains:

The object is estimated to have been about 17 m across with a mass of 7,000?10,000 tonnes when it hit atmosphere. It exploded with a force of nearly 500 kilotons of TNT ?- some 30 times the energy released by the Hiroshima atomic bomb ? around 15 to 20 km above the ground.

No wonder reports from Chelyabinsk, the city close to where the meteorite struck, described widespread window breakages and structural damage. [ESA]
