Raines, Miami Northwestern finalize football series

Raines will play one its biggest regular-season football opponents in program history when it faces state power Miami Northwestern for the next two years in a series that was finalized Friday.

The Vikings will visit Northwestern on Sept. 7 at Traz Powell Stadium and host the game in 2014, potentially at EverBank Field. There is optimism that both games could be televised.

?It was a suggestion from Superintendent [Nikolai] Vitti, who recognized we have huge amounts of talent when it comes to football and other things,? said Raines principal Shateena Brown. ?With him coming from South Florida, he knows that area. It?s just a matchup of giants, if you will.?

The game was agreed to weeks ago, but given a date Friday afternoon, a Week 2 game that comes smack dab in the middle of a brutal stretch of games. Raines opens at home against White, visits Northwestern and then hosts First Coast and Bolles.

?It?s been a long time since [a game like this],? said Raines coach Deran Wiley. ?You look back on the last four years and we?ve been building for these moments.?

Raines has college prospects in quarterback Marvin Zanders, running back Alex Gardner and offensive guard Travaris Dorsey in the Class of 2014, all of whom are potential major Football Bowl Subdivision signees. Freshman defensive lineman Solomon Kinley (6-3, 330) also has the potential to be one of the area?s top recruits in 2016.

Northwestern has had five players selected in the NFL draft since 2008, the second most of any high school in the country. St. Thomas Aquinas has had eight players drafted in that span. Northwestern has won four state championships, the last one coming in 2007.
